Session

The word Presbyterian comes from the Greek word "presbuteros" which means "elder", not as in older, but as in a wiser, trusted, calm, thick-skinned, leader whom the community has come to trust.

Our Session is comprised of eleven persons; nine lay people elected by the congregation as Ruling Elders with voice and vote on all matters relating to the church, and our two Pastors as Teaching Elders with voice and vote but outnumbered by the laypersons.

We believe everyone is equally called to all forms and shapes of ministry. Therefore, on Session, we try to have a balance of younger and older, male and female, long-time members and relatively new members. Each Elder is elected to a three-year term and serves as a liaison between the Session and one of our committees. Each year, one-third of the Elders rotate off and a new class of Elders is nominated, elected, examined, ordained, and installed to serve.

Diaconate

This Congregation also uses a Diaconate or “Board of Deacons”. In a Presbyterian church, Deacons are uniquely called individuals. While Elders on Session have to plan for buildings, dollars, personnel, and programs, Deacons are called to care for the flesh of the church and community. Deacons are the gardeners of a growing congregation providing home visits, rides, and moral support to everyone. Like Elders, Deacons are elected to a three-year term and each year, one-third of the Deacons rotate off and a new class of Deacons are nominated, examined, ordained, and installed to active service. Rev. Caitlan serves to support the Diaconate in their ministry.

The Deacons organize themselves around three groups of need:

  • Homebound - When someone temporarily or permanently can no longer come to church, church will continue to go to them. We visit, call, email, and bring gifts. We make sure they stay connected to worship or small groups online. We sent care packages on special occasions, and take communion.

  • Prayer List - When someone appears on our prayer list, we respond to them with notes, visits, flowers, cards, calls, texts, emails, anything to help them know we are beside them and willing to help ease their burden or suffering.

  • Follow Up - Sometimes, people will drift from church. They back away from worship or stop attending groups. They miss all church events or stop giving money or time. Our deacons follow up to learn what changed and why, and how the church can better feed their mind, body, heart, and spirit.

Nominate the next Leaders

In the Presbyterian Church, the congregation has one BIG power, the responsibility to elect our own leaders. The coongregation elected a nominating committee in January, and they need to hear from YOU!
